Hairless cats require a specialized kind of attention, from caring for their skin to keeping them warm and preventing acne. Here are some things to bear in mind when it comes to hairless cat care, as well as a step-by-step bathing guide!

Bathing

A regular bath is not necessary for cats with fur unless they are smelly, as directed by a veterinarian. However, a Sphynx does require slightly more attention. They should be bathed once a week with warm water and hypoallergenic shampoo to aid in the removal of natural oils and blackheads.

Nails

Sphynx cats need their nails trimmed more than other cats because they lack the fur that protects their skin from abrasions. If you don't keep their nails in check, they could end up with an infection.

Winter Care

Sphynx cats need a little extra care in the winter. Make sure they have plenty of warm blankets and clothing to keep them comfortable and be prepared for more baths since they may get a bit sweaty with all the extra layers.

Summer Care

Sphynx cats need extra fur care during the summer too. While ensuring proper water consumption is key, a Sphynx also needs a place to cool off from the summer heat. Be sure to provide them with access to an air-conditioned room, fan, or cooling bed during the hot summer months.

Hairless Cats Step by Step Bathing Guide

Choose a shampoo; we suggest sticking with a mild one. Look for something that has colloidal oatmeal, is moisturizing, and does not include harsh detergents. If the pH level is stated, search for one in the neutral range around 7. Fill the sink with warm water and lay a mat/towel across the bottom – this will help them from slipping and sliding around.

Gently place your cat in the water, supporting their weight. Make sure to avoid getting any water in their ears or eyes.

The best way to bathe a hairless cat is to start at the neck and work your way down, avoiding the head. Use short, firm strokes to gently wash the cat.

Wash their feet, pressing gently on the toe pads to reveal the claws, and cleaning around the pads and base with soapy water.

Wash your Sphynx's eyes with a damp cloth to remove any dirt.

To bathe a hairless cat, begin by filling a cup with warm water and wetting down the cat's body. Apply a small amount of gentle soap to the cat's fur and use your hands to work up a lather. Rinse the soap away with warm water, avoiding the head and eyes.
